Aluminized Steel / Stainless Steel Exhaust Downpipe Performance

The downpipe bolts directly to the turbine housing and helps direct
exhaust gases through the rest of the exhaust system. Most factory
downpipes will have at least one very restrictive catalytic
converter. These do a great job of cleaning the exhaust gases but
are also very restrictive causing potential power to be lost.The downpipe on your turbocharged vehicle is directing the exhaust
gases out of the turbine housing into the exhaust system. An
aftermarket downpipe will typically be larger in diameter and
either uses a high-flowing catalytic converter or remove the
catalytic converter altogether.
Type: Cat and catless
Aftermarket downpipes typically come in two configurations. One
being catted (with high-flow catalytic converter) and the other
being catless(all the catalytic converters are removed). The
catalytic converter cleans the exhaust gases as they pass through
the catalyst. This means you will not have to worry about the smell
of raw exhaust fumes. If you purchase a catless downpipe be aware
that the vehicle is going to smell as those exhaust gases are not
being cleaned prior to exiting the vehicle.

The exhaust system handles a lot of heat. It is also exposed to the
elements. The exhaust system must be strong and durable.
Exhaust tubing snakes from the engine to the rear bumper. It has to
be routed around other parts. The exhaust system must be easy to
bend and weld. For these reasons, steel is usually the material of
choice. But, there are different types of steel. Each one has
different properties.There are 4 main types of steel used to make
exhaust parts. When buying exhaust parts, it is important to know
the pros and cons of the material you choose.
Mild Steel
For a long time, mild steel was a popular material for exhaust
parts. It is light weight, easy to work with, and inexpensive.
However, it rusts very quickly. Mild steel parts have a short life
span, compared to other materials.
Aluminized Steel
Exhaust parts made from aluminized steel have similar properties to
mild steel. The difference is that the metal has an aluminized
coating. The coating helps resist rust and corrosion. It is more
expensive, but will last longer than mild steel.
tainless Steel
Exhaust parts made from stainless steel have the best resistance to
rust. However, they will rust over time. Stainless steel is the
most expensive choice. It is also more difficult to bend and weld.
There are different grades of stainless steel. 409 and 304 are the
most popular grades used in exhaust parts. Even though they are
both considered stainless, 409 and 304 have significant
differences.
